A music club for friends.
Soundwave Society started as a music club for friends who share a deep appreciation for music and the connections it can build. We were having so much fun with it, that we decided we should push the idea further, and thus this website was born.
Before our ambitions and passion for music took us to blog posts, concert reviews, interviews, and more, we began as most clubs do. Weekly discussions, sharing our music with each other, and understanding each member’s diverse perspectives a little bit better each session by fostering a respectful environment for dialogue that is rooted in our friendship. At the heart of Soundwave Society is the strengthening of friendships and appreciation of art, thus building deeper understandings.
We believe that music brings us closer together, allowing us to learn more about each other as we share our persona thoughts on the tracks we’re all consuming. Discovering each other’s tastes, preferences, and opinions on music opens up new conversations and connections.
HOW IT WORKS
Upon the creation of the Society, our first order of business was to decide how to conduct our operations. With a group of 10 members, organization is a key element for successful group interaction. Utilizing open discussions and the assortment of knowledge and skills of our members, we decided to create a Discord channel as a home base. Channels were created for numerous topics, in order to keep our many discussions organized and clear. This leads us into the Soundwave Society system of operations, as below.
ALBUM DISCUSSION
Each week, one member of our club chooses an album to share with the group, and throughout the week we each separately gather our thoughts. At the conclusion of the 7-day stretch we meet up, whether virtual or in-person, and share our thoughts with the group. That same week, we rotate to our next member, who will put forth their album of choice, and continue this cycle until each of us have had a turn to share an album. The end of each cycle is what we consider a “season,” and at the end of each season, we vote on an assortment of awards relating to the past season’s music, and put on an awards ceremony wrap-up event for the members.
While album discussions are our main focus of the group, we have added additional aspects to the club’s operations.
THEME WEEKS & EP WEEKS
For 2-week intervals, we offset Theme Weeks and EP Weeks. At the start of a 2-week span, we will have a random theme generated. This theme could be anything, from “choose a song with a colour in the title” to “choose your favourite song released in 2023.” We then have two weeks to select a song that fits the theme, and share with the group.
At the conclusion of Theme Weeks, we will move onto EP Weeks, which runs in a similar fashion to album reviews. A member of the club will put forth an EP of their choosing, and at the end of the two week span, members of the club will submit a short write up of their thoughts on the EP.
EVERYTHING ELSE
In addition to Album Discussion, Theme Weeks, and EP Weeks, the group enjoys sharing new music releases, upcoming local concerts, and general music dialogue! We have dedicated channels on our Discord in order to organize all of these different topics, and to have a record of the dialogue in the applicable channels for easy finding.
Since establishment in November of 2023, we still continue to find new ways to evolve. While our system has been very successful due to the dedication of each of our members, our ambition has sprouted more ideas to incorporate into our routine to consistently keep things fresh. We look forward to growing the Society through whatever ideas or opportunities that present themselves in the future!
