“Give it up for yourself, we can’t do this by ourselves”

The final stop of Mick Jenkins’ North American leg of the Thank You For Waiting Tour brought the Chicago artist to Wild Buffalo House of Music in Bellingham, Washington. Jenkins was touring his highly acclaimed 2023 LP, The Patience, another installment in his already deep discography spanning a decade.

The closing track of The Patience, “Mop,” features a spoken portion that reads as a timestamp of where Mick finds himself in his career at the time of creating the album.

“I feel like I’m just now stepping into a full agency over my creativity, my artistry, my business, even myself as a man, and I think it just takes time to get there, you know?”

This message became evident immediately when Mick took the stage to open his set with “Michelin Star,” the opening track of his 2023 album. His stage presence was that of a creative that is comfortable, but nowhere near complacent at this stage in his career, and this was only further complemented by the thematic depth of his words and the intention in how they were delivered. One of Mick’s gifts has always lied in his ability to engage his audience with his conviction, which works exceptionally well in tandem with the wisdom and insight threaded into his lyrics.

Throughout the show, the setlist also navigated through tracks from Mick’s extensive catalogue. Songs such as “Spread Love,” “Jazz,” and “Healer,” served as a reminder of just how long Mick Jenkins has been crafting high-quality music in his career.

A standout moment in the evening was when Mick delivered a seemingly impromptu speech, addressing the themes of patience and self belief that are woven into his latest record. He reminded the audience of the importance of resisting the temptation to compare their own journey to the fast success of others, and to embrace the path they’re on.

This show was delayed just over a month, with the original date being February 13th, giving new meaning to those who attended the Thank You For Waiting Tour. It was well worth the wait, as Mick’s performance left a lasting impact on those who attended, through his music and message. If you missed this show, catch Mick Jenkins, in Vancouver, BC, as he headlines the Westward festival on June 23, at the City Centre Artist Lodge.
