Skydaddy returns with “Mushrooms,” the first follow up to February’s standout EP, ‘Pilot.’ The new track offers vivid storytelling, depicting a heart-wrenching narrative based on real events from August of 2020. It is a nuanced detailing of one’s experience of the catastrophic Beirut Explosion, and the devastation that ensued for the city. In this latest record, Skydaddy takes a story and crafts a visceral experience that is certain to challenge listeners with its raw and reflective power.
Similarly to ‘Pilot,’ a highlight of “Mushrooms” is the immersive quality the instrumentation embodies, this time represented in a vehement fashion. The song climbs to an exertive, grand close, punctuated by colourful guitar play, haunting synths, and gradually, yet fervently growing percussion. The storytelling only becomes more emotionally resonant with each contributing element further enriching the composition. The track also features brilliant choral arrangements from a star-studded cast of guests. The choir progressively becomes more present as “Mushrooms” climbs towards its emphatic crescendo in the latter half, set up with the lyrics, “Let this sound shake your windows as it creeps, overhead / And prepare for another crescendo as the screams, coalesce.” This provides an especially beautiful standout moment within the stunning listen. The concept of this latest record is executed with grace and intensity, which leads to one of the most profound and memorable listening experiences to date in 2024.
