Smooth and soulful from beginning to end, Baby Rose and BADBADNOTGOOD showcase a high level of chemistry that comes together as one of the sharpest EP’s of 2024. Any follow up to this project from this pairing would be highly anticipated.

“An expansive, ever-shifting experience where each song applies a new pressure. Whether it’s a stunning build towards a peak of unrelenting instrumentation, or the ethereal, nearly haunting vocal stylings of Bowie Bartlett drawing you in like a steady but subtle pull of a thread, Flip Top Head never loosens its grip.”

4

red – mildred
Alt-Country

“There is an endearing gentleness to their alt-country sound that takes shape in a variety of ways due to the band’s dynamic ability to craft unique, compelling melodies with hints of nostalgia. Marked as charmingly charismatic, a staple throughout these offerings is reflective and vulnerable songwriting set against a backdrop of warm, inviting instrumentation. The band also consistently showcases a natural chemistry throughout the EP, with three members occasionally taking on the task of lead vocals, and all three exceptionally delivering.”

Note: red was released as part of a collection from mildred; as debut twin EPs, along with its relative EP, mild. Equally excellent, and well worth listening with red. Unfortunately, only one can make this list.

3

Hidden Minute – Sam Tudor
Folktronica / Alternative Folk

“There is a distinct irony in the idea that something so contemplative, reflective, and frequently ominous, can be so immediately resonant. Sam Tudor’s 2024 EP, Hidden Minute, is just that, as it aptly encapsulates the exploration of the inner-complexities that make up the human condition. Describing the EPs sound as “murky,” Tudor crafts rich soundscapes that are equal parts ethereal and foreboding, while he navigates self-reflection, loss, and growth vs. the passage of time. These delicately eerie elements come together to invite you to linger in its atmosphere, all while it subtly unsettles.”

Favourite Songs:
Do You Feel Free Now?, Fear You

2

Connla’s Well – Maruja
Post-Punk / Post-Rock

Despite not having a full length album under their belt, it would not be far-fetched to consider Maruja one of the most exciting and compelling acts in the Post-Rock / Post-Punk scene currently. Featuring explosive, frantic, atmospheric, and always stiflingly sharp instrumentation, Connla’s Well is a collection of tracks that lingers far beyond its runtime. Joe Carroll’s saxophone throughout the EP especially stands out, as while it takes on a sort of free jazz form, it also adds a beautifully haunting dynamic to the music.

Favourite Songs:
The Invisible Man, Zeitgeist, Resisting Resistance

1

Twice Around the Sun – Ugly
Art Rock / Progressive Rock

“This 6-track effort strikes a perfect balance between charm and intensity, with each song carrying a unique potency that is youthful, colourful, and always captivating. The band’s passionate art-rock workings, incorporating elements of prog and folk, create a lush and whimsical sound that remains focused and intentional, and aptly reflects the intricate tapestry of the EP’s cover art. Highlighted by brilliant group and layered vocals, meticulously crafted grandiose moments, and a consistently astounding chemistry among the band members, each track on ‘Twice Around the Sun’ holds a distinct power and spirit that enhances the immersive nature of the project. This unique cohesiveness makes the EP a truly engaging listen from start to finish.”
